Technology, Media & Digital

Few industries deliver change that's as fast and far-reaching in its impact as the technology, media and digital sectors. Technological developments and expanding media platforms are changing the way we live; and they underpin the way we do business.

Thanks to our clients' endlessly innovative work, we're always at the forefront of the rapidly evolving technology and online world. And as long-standing technology, media and digital specialists, we are fluent in this sector's often complex language.

Where our clients are innovative in developing new solutions and business models, we like to match their innovation in our own way: by developing legal strategies to protect value, ensure compliance with today's increasingly regulated business environment, manage legal risk and design new contract structures for new business models.

Our clients include technology companies, licensing software on traditional licenses, or – increasingly - providing Software as a Service or other cloud computing solutions. We also support clients who are procuring technology or IT services or who are outsourcing their IT or business processes.

In the online world, we act for many of the most innovative and creative internet businesses, including social media, online shopping and comparison sites, online publishers and content providers and a range of developers of new and innovative mobile apps and games.

Working together with our specialists in financial services regulation, we have a particular focus on FinTech, representing those who supply innovation to existing financial services players, such as banks, hedge funds, etc., as well as fintech companies developing new and innovative and potentially disruptive financial services, such as crowd funding platforms, peer to peer lenders, emoney and mobile payments and exchange and trading platforms. We help our FinTech clients to navigate the complex regulatory environment, protect their intellectual property and develop the contract terms of business to manage legal risk. Read more about our work in the FinTech sector here.

Our Publishing and Media practice covers all aspects of traditional and digital media. We have many years’ experience of advising leading independent publishers, business information providers and other UK and international publicity and media companies on M&A and investment transactions; and of advising publishing houses, licensing agencies and content providers on copyright and intellectual property matters. We also provide advice on the full range of commercial contracts and licences undertaken by publishing businesses. Read more about our work in the Publishing and Media sector here.

We also act for startups and entrepreneurs, as well as for the private equity, venture capital firms and angel investors that support them.

Many of our clients are international from the US and beyond, and we represent them in the UK and Europe. With a network of affiliates across Europe we can source - rapidly and cost-effectively - advice from specialists in other EU jurisdictions.
