The Department for Communities and Local Government has reduced the rateable value threshold, under which empty properties are exempt from paying business rates, from £18,000 to £2,600 from 1st April 2011. The threshold had been increased between April 2010 and March 2011 to help struggling landlords in the economic downturn. This reduction in the threshold will considerably reduce the number of properties that are exempt from paying business rates. We will have to wait and see what the affect will be on an already depressed market in certain areas.
