In our second travel webinar of 2024, we discussed some of the proposed EU reforms and how they will affect those companies who deal with EU-based consumers.

We were delighted to be joined by Irena Scullion, Indirect Tax Director at Grant Thornton, who has a particular specialism across the Consumer, Leisure & Hospitality sector and sits as an expert on the HMRC Expert Committee for the Tour Operators’ Margin Scheme.

We covered the following topics:

  1. Tax and the travel industry: Guest presenter, Irena, took us through the EU tax landscape post-Covid, as well as the updated view of HM Treasury and HMRC concerning the industry. Irena also considered the commercial reality of what this means to businesses in terms of staying compliant with international tax, along with thoughts on what Grant Thornton are currently seeing.
  2. Multi-modal journeys: We analysed the key aspects of EU proposals to ensure consistent rights and protections for passengers when undertaking journeys using multiple forms of transport.
  3. Air/ferry/rail regulations: The EU is seeking to make changes to its air, sea and railway regulations, which will include obligations (and potential liability!) for intermediaries. We highlighted the key changes for both operators and intermediaries.
  4. EU accessibility Act: With the Act due to take effect in EU member states in June 2025, we explained the steps companies should be taking to ensure compliance.

The webinar was hosted by travel partner, Farina Azam, and senior associate, Phyllis Acheampong.
