Following the announcement in the King’s Speech that the government will legislate to ban exploitative practices and enhance employment rights, and amend and modernise the immigration system, we hosted a webinar on Thursday 19 September, chaired by employment partner, Daisy Jones.

As more information on potential legislation is revealed over the summer, and with reference to Labour’s Plan to Make Work Pay, we provided updates on the most recent developments, including a focus on the following:

  • Unfair dismissal rights from day one and the use of probation periods
  • Flexible working as the ‘default position’ and the right to switch off
  • Introduction of a single enforcement body and the extended limitation period
  • Introduction of collective grievances, potential collective pay agreements, and the resurgence of Trade Union activity in all sectors
  • Single status of ‘worker’ and changes to parental leave within the first year of government
  • Addressing skills shortages through possible changes to the immigration system.
