On Tuesday 11 February 2025, we hosted a webinar on the SRA’s new guidance for in-house solicitors.

To date, there has been limited SRA guidance on in-house solicitors. This new guidance provides greater clarity on the standards and expectations for in-house solicitors, as well as for the organisations that employ them. It also sets out what employers of in-house solicitors cannot expect them to do.

The SRA says the guidance is relevant not just for in-house solicitors, but also senior executives and non-executives, as well as HR professionals and those who are responsible for managing and supervising solicitors and legal teams.

During the webinar, we discussed guidance on:

  • A solicitor’s professional obligations
  • Internal investigations
  • Reporting concerns about wrongdoing when working in-house
  • Legal professional privilege when working in-house
  • A new separate document for governing boards, chief executives, and senior officers in organisations employing in-house solicitors
  • Practical considerations for embedding the guidance in your business, so that everyone is clear as to what is expected
