City law firm Fox Williams LLP (Fox Williams) has appointed FinTech and Alternative Finance specialist Jonathan Segal as a Partner to bolster the firm’s established FinTech offering.  Jonathan joins Fox Williams from Wragge Lawrence Graham where he was Head of FinTech.

Jonathan advises clients across the FinTech and Alternative Finance spectrum, from start-ups disrupting existing markets with innovative technology to established financial institutions looking to invest in new technology.

He has particular expertise in peer-to-peer lending and crowdfunding platforms, drawing on his vast experience in the banking and finance sector gained both in-house at major financial institutions and in private practice.  Representative matters include advising an SME lending platform and a consumer lending platform on setting up their operations, a peer-to-peer car insurance platform on their funding requirements and Investec Bank on a new margin lending product to help grow its market share of high net worth clients.

Fox Williams’ dedicated FinTech and Alternative Finance team sits within the firm’s wider Corporate and Technology groups including Financial Services regulatory specialists.  The FinTech team, which includes 8 partners, has a growing client base in London’s burgeoning technology hubs, nationally and internationally.  It provides an in-depth sector knowledge across technology, media and digital and financial services to serve both established and new financial services clients who are embracing new technology platforms to drive their businesses.

Prior to joining Fox Williams, Jonathan gained experience as an in-house lawyer with Barclays Bank plc and Citco Financial Products where he helped design an FX trading platform.  He now advises clients across a variety of financial products, including loans (both corporate and consumer), real estate and development finance, asset-based lending, receivables financing, asset finance, trade finance, capital markets, derivatives and repos.  He also has extensive experience in the debt financing of technology companies.  As a specialist in this constantly evolving sector, Jonathan is heavily involved in next generation disruptive financial products such as virtual currencies, including Bitcoin.

Commenting on his appointment, Jonathan said:

“Fox Williams is particularly well-placed to provide FinTech legal services because of the team’s focus on the technology, media and digital and financial services sectors and the deep knowledge they can apply to the issues facing FinTech clients.  I’m delighted to be adding to the team’s expertise and look forward to growing our client-base as the FinTech sector continues to evolve.”

Paul Osborne, Fox Williams’ Senior Partner, said:

“Jonathan is a leading practitioner in the fields of FinTech and Alternative Finance and represents an important strategic hire for our dedicated FinTech team.  The City is going through its next stage of evolution as fast growing FinTech companies emerge and established financial services providers increasingly embrace online strategies to interact with their customers.  Fox Williams is responding to these changing client needs and we sit at the heart of the innovation taking place at Tech City and Silicon Roundabout in London.  We are excited to welcome Jonathan to the firm and by the opportunities we see ahead.”
